Since the opening of Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa, discerning visitors to Las Vegas have a fresh, contemporary alternative to the city’s famously massive hotels and casinos. Situated in Las Vegas’ new luxury community of Summerlin, Red Rock is the first billion-dollar resort built off the Strip delivering cool, classic Vegas, reinvented for the 21st Century. The 70-acre facility is inspired by the desert-scape it is named for and pays homage to the elegant, mid-century desert oases of Las Vegas and Palm Springs, Calif.
The signature style of Red Rock begins with sophisticated contemporary lines and a rich color palette taken from neighboring Red Rock Canyon. Interiors of rusty reds, tans, rich browns, earthy greens, and shimmering metallic reflect the natural beauty of the Red Rock Mountains. Luxurious materials including exotic wood, crystal and rare stone create an environment of understated opulence.
NATURAL STONE A KEY ELEMENT IN RED ROCK DESIGN
Natural stone plays a key role in bringing the vision and aesthetics of Red Rock to life. The world-class team assembled to create Red Rock includes Western Tile & Marble, a leading tile and stone specialist known for high-end work that includes landmark Las Vegas casinos such as Mandalay Bay and Wynn Las Vegas. Sean Carpenter, project manager, Western Tile & Marble, led the team responsible for over 100,000 square feet of teakwood sandstone marble, onyx and other natural stone on the casino floor, in the hotel lobby and an additional 60,000 square feet of quarry tile in back-of-house service and kitchen areas
For a project this extensive and high-profile, proper surface preparation and setting materials are just as important as the tile and stone. Having relied on installation systems from Custom Building Products for many years, Carpenter knew that Custom would deliver the performance, expertise and support necessary, so he contacted Custom and invited the company to review the project and make recommendations.
INSTALLATION SYSTEM FROM CUSTOM BUILDING PRODUCTS ENSURES QUALITY RESULTS
A team of experts from Custom, including architectural representative Dale Roberts, CDT, CTC, CSI, analyzed the project and recommended a complete system of products – from surface preparation and setting materials to grout – for each installation area. After specifying proper materials for Sean’s team, Custom stayed involved with ongoing technical consultation and jobsite visits throughout the seven months of installation.
“We have worked with Custom products for years, and knew that its combination of reliable, high-performance products and technical support were unsurpassed,” said Carpenter. “It was an easy decision to use Custom products exclusively on this project and the result is an installation that is both beautiful and structurally sound.”
Surface preparation was the first order of business for the 100,000 square feet of public areas, including the casino floor and hotel lobby. The existing concrete subfloor was uneven, requiring generous amounts of Skim Coat & Patch Cement Underlayment to create a uniform surface suitable for setting stone. RedGard Waterproofing and Crack Prevention Membrane was applied throughout for crack isolation. The 12-inch by 24-inch and 6-inch by 24-inch teakwood sandstone marble along with extensive onyx, granite and tiger’s eye accents, were set using MegaFlex Crack Prevention Mortar, a high performance mortar with exceptionally high bond strength and crack isolation properties up to 1/8 inch. 100% Solids Epoxy Grout, in neutral shades complementary to the natural beauty of the stone, was the final step.
FUNCTION IS CRITICAL FOR SERVICE AND KITCHEN AREAS
Though unseen by guests and visitors, the 60,000 square feet of service area behind the scenes is critical to the resort’s daily operations and had to be done right. A mud float was applied to create the proper pitch and drainage and was coated with RedGard using an airless spray application, which saved significant time for the installation team. Commercial 6-inch by 6-inch quarry tiles were then set using VersaBond Flex Fortified Thin-Set Mortar and grouted with 100% Solids Epoxy Grout.
SYSTEM WARRANTY PROVIDES PEACE OF MIND
In addition to reliability, Western Tile & Marble needed the assurance and peace of mind that come with a long-term warranty – in fact this was one deciding factor in their selection of an installation system. Known throughout the tile and stone industry for its comprehensive warranty program, Custom tailored a warranty for the Red Rock project, guaranteeing the entire installation with a 15-Year Installation Systems Warranty.
After a splashy grand opening in April, 2006, Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa is bringing old-school Vegas cool to a new generation of travelers and gamers who enjoy elegance and the beauty of the desert motif brought to life through natural stone and luxurious décor.
