Sealers play a crucial point in the care and maintenance of natural stone, tile and grout. Sealing will help protect these surfaces from everyday spills and stains - as well as the effects of water or weather. Some sealers can also enhance the appearance of natural stone. We’re going to show you how to select and apply a sealer, such as one of the CUSTOM products shown.
Sealers can be used on countertops, floors and walls, before or after the installation of stone or tile. They are easy to apply and can be used indoors or out. Some sealing products don’t change the appearance of the surface while delivering stain protection. Others enhance or deepen the color and character of natural stone.Alternatively to grout release, you can also use a sealer after tile has been set, but before grouting. This will make the grout clean up process faster and easier. If you install a cement-based grout, apply a sealer to help protect cement grout joints from staining.
Depending on your project and the type of sealer used, assemble the following tools and materials:• One quart or larger container• Applicator sponge, bottle, paint brush or paint pad • Nap roller and paint pan• Grout sponge• Microfiber, cotton or paper towels
Before sealing, the surface must be dry, clean and free of contaminants. If the product is used as a pre-grouting sealer, follow the instructions on the mortar. Typically, the mortar must cure for 24 hours before applying sealer to the tiles. Wait at least 2 hours after pre-sealing tile before starting to grout. If you’re sealing a project after grouting, cementitious grout joints usually need to cure for 3 days prior to sealing. Test a small section of tile, stone or grout with the sealer to make sure you are happy with the look before starting the project. Wear impervious gloves, such as nitrile, and other protection recommended on the safety data sheet.
Apply the sealer at full strength in an even coat across the surface using an applicator, brush, cloth or roller. Grout joints will require a small tip like a brush, but floors will go faster with a paint roller. Based on product instructions, allow the sealer to dwell on the surface for 5 minutes. Then, wipe off the excess sealer until the surface appears completely dry. Do not allow the sealer set up or dry on the surface. If this happens and a white film appears, remove with Aqua Mix NanoScrub and a white nylon scrub pad. For enhancing sealers, or any residue that has dried, call Custom’s Care and Maintenance Technical Department
After two hours, test the sealed surface to see if water droplets penetrate. If they do, another coat is required. Porous surfaces may require additional applications. Allow at least 30 minutes between coats.
Maintain sealed surfaces with a CUSTOM cleaning product that includes a resealer. Use the water droplet test annually and apply a new coat of sealer as needed. Sealers provide stain resistance, allowing a longer reaction time when spills occur. It is still high recommended to clean up spills right away.
