California Trauma Hospital Upgrades Tile Assemblies to CUSTOM’s Fusion Pro® Grout

IMG 0856The Rideout Regional Medical Center in Marysville, Calif. provides state-of-the-art health care serving the growing population of four Central Valley counties.  This 6-story, 220,000-square-foot facility includes a full-service trauma center with a rooftop heliport for Life Flight operations and private hospital rooms with serenely tiled bathrooms.

A full system of tile installation products from Custom Building Products was specified to protect these and other tile assemblies when the hospital was expanded in 2015.

Northern California Tile & Stone (NCTS) served as tile contractor on this large-scale addition project. Roger Leasure, president of NCTS, appreciated working with CUSTOM products for many reasons.  “With the visibility of tile as a finish material, the mortar and grout should be the best.  We had a zero punch list on this project,” he said.

Rideout Retouch 1Tile throughout the hospital was set with two different thin-sets from CUSTOM, and usage was determined by tile size, composition and location.  Used for smaller tile, VersaBond® Professional Thin-Set Mortar provides good bond strength to substrates and also cures consistently, even in cold climates.  Larger tile on the project was installed with ProLite® Premium Large Format Tile Mortar.  ProLite exceeds ANSI A118.15T and offers high bond strength in a lightweight formula with excellent handling characteristics.  Ideal for setting challenging large format tile, stone and glass, ProLite will not slip on walls and offers non-slump performance for floor installations.

“ProLite is a fantastic non-sag mortar that’s perfect for wall tile installation,” said Jeff Walker, project manager at NCTS.  “It performs well even when installing large format tiles on vertical surfaces.”

The primary grout at the hospital was upgraded from a traditional cement option to Fusion Pro® Single Component® Grout for the ultimate in stain resistance.  Fusion Pro is stain-proof, color perfect and ready to use right from the re-sealable bucket.  This revolutionary grout is spread and cleaned at the same time, plus it never needs sealing.   Installers at NCTS experienced another benefit of using single component grout – increased ease of application.

IMG 0067“The Fusion Pro grout performed wonderfully on this project,” offered Walker.  “Fusion Pro performs like an epoxy grout and has Microban to prevent bacteria growth, making it perfect for the hospital.  The premixed packaging helps save on labor - especially on these large commercial projects.”

Tile in the food service area was grouted with CEG-IG 100% Solids Industrial Grade Epoxy Grout

CEG-IG is an industrial grade, water cleanable, epoxy grout that has high chemical, temperature and stain resistance. It is formulated for use in harsh environments with exposure to harsh cleaning regimens, such as in commercial kitchens.

“We see a great return on investment with high performance grouts that offer more benefits to the building owner,” said Leasure.

Tile Theme at Rideout Hospital

Located 40 miles north of Sacramento, Marysville bills itself as the Gateway to the Goldfields.  The green, brown and golden tiles reflect the colors of the surrounding farmlands and foothills in this important Northern California agribusiness center.  Photographs of iconic local farming scenes, such as almond trees in bloom, appear in common areas and the well-known California Quail, also the state bird, features in the hospital’s logo.

IMG 0889Nearly 160 patient, public and staff restrooms at Rideout Regional Medical Center received 12" x 12" Continental Slate color body porcelain in Persian Gold.  Accent tile in browns and grays varies between random ceramic trim and pencil glass mosaics.   Walls and pillars in the cafeteria area were set with 4" x 24" Fabrique wood-look planks in a trendy chevron pattern.  Behind serving counters, more traditional 3" x 6" Rittenhouse Square and Natural Hues subway-style tile was installed on walls.  All ceramic, porcelain and glass tile on the project was supplied by Daltile.
