Suitable Substrates

Suitable backings, when properly prepared, are plumb and true masonry, concrete, gypsum wallboard (dry areas only), WonderBoard® Backerboard, cured Portland cement mortar beds, Jamo WATERPROOF WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE, brick, ceramic tile, marble, scarified vinyl or linoleum and exterior grade plywood (interior residential dry areas).

General Surface Prep

All surfaces must be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from contaminants that would prevent a good bond. Surfaces should accept water penetration in order to form a good bond. Concrete or plaster must be porous, fully cured and not subject to hydrostatic pressure. Floors of APA exterior grade plywood must be a minimum of 1" (2.5 cm) thick with deflection not to exceed 1/360 of the span. Existing ceramic tile must be well bonded and rough sanded.

Health Precautions

Contains Portland cement. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection. Avoid eye contact or prolonged contact with skin. Wash thoroughly after handling. If eye contact occurs, flush with water for 15 minutes. Consult a physician immediately. WARNING! Do Not Breathe Dust! Improperly cured and wet plywood, particle board or strip wood surfaces are not considered suitable substrates. Use in temperature ranges above 40° F (4.5° C). Protect from freezing for the first 72 hours.

Mixing Procedures

Thoroughly mix approximately 1-1/2 gallons (5.67 L) clean, cool water and 50 lbs. (22.68 kg) MULTI-BOND together to a smooth, paste-like consistency. Let slake or stand 5 – 10 minutes, stir again and use. Stir occasionally to keep fluffy, but do not retemper (add water). When properly mixed, troweled ridges will stand with little or no slump.

Application of Product

INSTALLATION TO CONFORM TO ANSI A108.5. Use proper sized notched trowel to ensure 100% coverage under tile. Apply mortar with flat side of trowel held at a 35° to 40° angle to force material into irregularities in the surface for maximum adhesion. Then apply bonding quantity of mortar with notched side of trowel. Press tile firmly into place with slight twisting motion. Adjust tile promptly and beat in with block and rubber mallet. With some tile, back buttering is advisable. Periodically pull up and check a recently placed tile to ensure that proper amount of mortar is being applied. Do not spread more material than can be tiled in 15 minutes, or while material has wet tack (sticky to the touch). If material has skinned over (not sticky), recomb with notch trowel, if too dry, remove and replace with fresh material. Material in bucket will remain workable in excess of 4 hours.

Curing of Product

Allow to cure for 18 – 24 hours before grouting or light traffic, depending upon temperature and humidity. Normal grouting should be done 24 hours after initial set to allow for proper curing.

Cleaning of equipment

Clean with water before material dries.
