Products : JAMO : Setting Materials : Mastik 440 Type 1 Ceramic Tile Mastic
MASTIK 440 is a contractor grade acrylic mastic for use on floor and wall installations. Exceeds ANSI A136.1.
MASTIK 440 is designed for interior use on surfaces which are structurally sound, level and dry, such as properly prepared gypsum wallboard, WonderBoard® Backerboard, or in interior intermittent water exposure areas such as countertops, tub surrounds and shower walls. For installation of ceramic or mosaic tile up to 8" x 8" (20 x 20 cm).
MASTIK 440 will bond tile to properly prepared vertical surfaces requiring intermittent water resistance. It is suitable for commercial or residential applications. Use only on structurally sound interior surfaces such as plaster, plaster board, gypsum wallboard, exterior or marine grade plywood, plumb and true masonry concrete, water-resistant wallboard or WonderBoard® Backerboard, that are not subject to prolonged water exposure.
All suitable surfaces must be clean, dry, sound, firm, free from dust, dirt, soap film, oils, sealers, adhesive or any foreign matter that would impair adhesion. Painted enameled walls and floors must be thoroughly scored or sanded to ensure bond to original base wall and floor. Surfaces should accept water penetration in order to form a good bond. If water beads, surface contaminates are present and loss of adhesion may occur. The contaminants should be removed before installation. Moisture areas, such as shower and tub areas, should be primed by applying a skim cost of MASTIK 440. Cut away wall materials approximately 1/4" (6.4 mm) away from any receptors or fixtures and fill with MASTIK 440. Maintain mastic at temperature above 50° F (10° C) or below 100° F (38° C) for 48 hours before and after installation until the mastic cures. Never apply over plaster or brown coat that is not fully cured or prepared. Exterior grade plywood or WonderBoard® Backerboard, on floors must be securely nailed and free of spring or flexibility. Installations where constant dampness, alkalinity, or hydrostatic pressure is present are not recommended.
NOTE: It is the responsibility of the user to determine dryness of all subfloors prior to installation. Floors must be level to a tolerance of 1/8" per 10 sq. ft. (3.2 mm per 0.93 M2 ). Additional installation procedures may be found in the TCA Handbook.
Expansion joints, control joints and cold joints should never be bridged with setting material. They must be continued through the tile and filled with an appropriate elastomeric sealant.
Contains Mineral Spirits and Ethylene Glycol. Use only in a well ventilated area. Open doors and windows to create cross ventilation. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors or mist. Keep container closed when not in use. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. KEEP FROM FREEZING.
Inhalation: Move person to fresh air. Call physician immediately. Ingestion: Call physician immediately.
Skin Contact: Remove fresh adhesive with warm soapy water. If irritation occurs, call physician immediately.
Eye Contact: Flood eyes with large quantities of water. Call physician immediately.
Do not use MASTIK 440 for steam rooms or surfaces subject to standing water. Do not use for setting tile in exterior areas or interior wet areas. Do not use to install natural stone, tile with ridge, button or lug backs, Saltillo pavers or glass tile. Do not use to install fixtures. Use only over approved, properly prepared surfaces designed for a Type I mastic. MASTIK 440 must not be used directly over hardwood, Luan plywood, parquet, particle board, cushion, sponge-back or asbestos-containing vinyl flooring, metal, fiberglass ceramic tile, plastic laminates, painted surfaces or OSB panels.
Remove any dirt or other foreign material from the area to be tiled. On floors use a 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/4" (6 x 6 x 6 mm) square-notch trowel for ceramic floor tile. On walls use a 3/16" (4.8 mm) V-notch trowel. Apply a skim coat using the flat side of the trowel held at a 45° angle to the surface. With pressure, force material into irregularities in the surface for maximum adhesion. Apply additional mastic with notched side of trowel. Press tile firmly into place with a slight twisting motion. Periodically pull up a tile and check the back to ensure at least 95% mastic transfer to the back of tiles. Do not apply more mastic than can be covered with tile in 30 minutes. If mastic starts to skin over, retrowel before setting tile. Close container between spreading and after each use.
Allow a minimum of 24 hours drying time before applying grout depending on ambient temperature and humidity. Cure time can be greatly extended when setting dense tile, tile larger than 6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm), or bonding tile to dense surfaces, in high humidity or when temperature is below 60°F (15°C)
Fresh mastic can be removed with a wet, soapy cloth. Dried mastic can be removed with a razor blade. Keep tools in water when not in use.
