MARBLE MASTER is specially formulated to hold large tiles and marble units in place on vertical or horizontal surfaces. It allows for a minimal setting bed of 3/16" (4.8 mm) or as thick as 3/4" (19.1 mm) after beat in. MARBLE MASTER may be used as a bond coat for setting absorptive, semi-vitreous and vitreous ceramic tile in residential and commercial installations. MARBLE MASTER is an excellent water and impact resistant dry set mortar, which is water cleanable and nonflammable. It is also good for exterior work and requires no soaking of tiles. MARBLE MASTER will not be affected by prolonged contact with water. It provides a permanent installation with higher bond strength and lower material and labor cost than conventional Portland cement mortar beds.

Technical Data Sheet

Suitable Substrates

Suitable backings, when properly prepared, are plumb and true masonry concrete, cement backerboards, Jamo WATERPROOF WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE, gypsum board (dry areas only), WonderBoard® Backerboard, cured Portland cement mortar beds, brick, ceramic tile and marble. In interior dry areas only, it can be used over exterior grade plywood.

General Surface Prep

All surfaces on which tile are to be set must be dry, structurally sound, free of dirt or curing compounds, and not subject to temperatures below 40° F (4.5° C) or above 100° F (38° C). Additional installation procedures may be found in the TCA Handbook.

All wooden flooring, when placed over conventional floor joist or other systems, should be of a design and thickness to maintain a substrate of deflection not to exceed 1/360 of span, including live and dead loads. The flooring to receive MARBLE MASTER should be exterior grade plywood only, secured with screw type nails and glued where possible. A gap of 1/8" to 3/16" (3.2 - 4.8 mm) shall be left between sheets of plywood to allow for expansion. In addition, all wooden surfaces must be for interior use only and protected from exposure to water.

Health Precautions

May cause eye, skin or lung injury. Contains free silica. Prolonged exposure to dust may cause delayed lung disease (silicosis). May cause cancer based on animal data. Eliminate exposure to dust. Use NIOSH approved dust mask for silica dust. Contains Portland cement. If any cement or cement mixture gets into eyes, flush immediately and repeatedly with water, and consult physician promptly. Fresh mixed cement, mortar, concrete, or grout may cause skin injury. Avoid contact with skin where possible and wash exposed skin areas promptly with water. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

Limitations to the Product

MARBLE MASTER must not be used directly over asphalt sheeting, vinyl covered wallboard, Masonite, cement asbestos board, painted surfaces, metal, glass or plastic. Improperly cured or wet plywood, particle board, or strip wood surfaces are not considered suitable substrates. Use in temperature ranges above 40° F (4.5° C). Protect from freezing for the first 72 hours.

Mixing Procedures

For floor applications add the contents of the bag to approximately 1-1/2 gallons (5.67 L) of clean water suitable for drinking; for wall applications reduce amount of water to 1 gallon and 1-1/2 quarts (5.1 L). Mix thoroughly and let stand for 15 minutes then remix before using. Mortar should be of a thick, trowelable consistency. If a mechanical mixer is to be used, it must be done at a low RPM (150) so as not to entrap air into the mortar. Do not add water or additional powder after slaking period. Due to the high polymer content of MARBLE MASTER, DO NOT ADD LATEX ADMIXTURES.

Application of Product

Remove any dirt or other foreign material from the area to be tiled. With pressure, apply a skim coat on the substrate using the flat side of the trowel. With a notch trowel, immediately follow with a heavier coat of material leaving enough mortar to provide 100% coverage to the back of the tile. The mortar bed should be 3/16" to 3/4" (5 – 19 mm) thick. With high lug tile, back buttering may be required to ensure 100% coverage to the back of the tiles. For best results, cover only a small area at a time with this mix. Then immediately cover this with tile and beat in the tile. Once initial set has taken place do not vibrate or beat the tile or its backing.

Curing of Product

A minimum cure will be obtained in 12 - 24 hours depending on ambient temperatures and humidity. Normal grouting should be done 48 hours after initial set.

Cleaning of equipment

Water will remove uncured mortar from the tile surface or tools.
