Suitable Tile Types

  • Brick, thin brick, manufactured stone veneer, thin stone veneer
  • Cement-based precast terrazzo
  • Natural stone tile
  • Vitreous, semi-vitreous or non-vitreous tile
  • Stone veneer, thin veneer and cement-body tile

Suitable Substrates

Well-bonded Thin Veneer and Manufactured Stone

General Surface Prep

Masonry, veneer, or stone must be firmly bonded to a sound substrate, and setting material must be cured a minimum 24 – 48 hours before finishing, unless rapid setting adhesives are used. See the corresponding data for the bonding materials used in your application. Ensure that the mortar joints are free of loose debris, contaminants and excess mortar. Tile with high absorption, surface porosity or rough-textured surfaces and certain types of porcelain may require sealing prior to mortar placement to prevent staining. Applying one coat of Custom® TVIS™ Penetrating Sealer prior to Pointing Mortar to assist with cleanup of cement and color pigment on surface of manufactured stone or thin veneer. Always test sealer first in an inconspicuous area for compatibility with stone. Contact Custom® Building Products Technical Services if pre-sealing or temporary protection of the veneer is required.

Health Precautions

This product contains Portland cement and free silica. Avoid eye contact or prolonged contact with skin. Wash thoroughly after handling. If eye contact occurs, flush with water for 15 minutes and consult a physician. Do not breathe dust; wear a NIOSH approved respirator.

Limitations to the Product

  • Premium Veneer Pointing Mortar should not be installed when ambient temperature is lower than 50°F (10°C) or higher than 100°F (38°C).
  • Some veneer materials may be scratched, stained or damaged by sanded or pigmented mortars. Test a small area prior to use. Should this become an issue, contact Custom® Building Products Technical Services. Stone or veneer with high absorption, surface porosity or rough-textured surfaces may require sealing prior to mortar placement to prevent staining. Contact Technical Services if pre-sealing or temporary protection of the veneer is required.
  • Color variation can occur due to veneer type, tile porosity, jobsite conditions, application and finishing techniques. Variation can be minimized by following directions and using as little water as possible for cleanup.

Mixing Ratios

Mix 4 quarts (3.78 L) clean water to 50 lbs (22.68 kg) bag of mortar. When used in a horizontal application such as panel work; the water may be increased by up to 15% or 4.5 quarts (3.78 L).

Mixing Procedures

Mix with a trowel or low speed mixer (less than 300 rpm) to achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency. Let the mixture stand (slake) for 5-10 minutes, and then remix and use. Periodically remix to keep the mixture workable, but do not add water, which can weaken the joint, cause color variation and possible cause shrinkage, cracks and pinholes. Discard mortar when it becomes too stiff to work.

Application of Product

USE CHEMICAL-RESISTANT GLOVES, such as nitrile, when handling product.

Lightly dampen absorptive, highly-porous veneer with clean, cool water, but leave no standing water in the joints. For mortar or grout bag application, bag the mortar into the joint. Once the mortar has become stiff in the joint, using a striking or joint tool, strike the mortar joints to provide the desired finish. Remove excess mortar using a masonry brush or sponge. Do not over wash the mortar joint. Holding a rubber float at a 45© angle, completely fill the joints.

For float applications:

Holding the edge of the float at a 45© angle to spread the mortar uniformly into the joints and then at a 90© angle, remove excess grout. Do not spread more mortar than can be cleaned within 30 minutes of the mortar firming and use as little water as possible for mortar cleanup. Using a striking or joint tool, strike the mortar joints to provide the desired finish. Remove excess mortar using a masonry brush or sponge. Do not over wash the mortar joint.

Curing of Product

Curing time is affected by ambient and surface temperatures and humidity.

Cleaning of equipment

Clean with water before the material dries.

Product Maintenance

Properly installed product requires no special maintenance.
