One key to a quality floor covering installation is starting off with a flat substrate. Only a stable and flat surface will allow for a rapid and durable installation of a variety of floor coverings like rubber, vinyl, wood and tile. An exceptionally flat sub floor is absolutely required when installing large format tile (which are tiles longer than 15” on any side). Floor flatness will prevent problems like lippage or uneven tiles caused by irregularities in the subfloor.
It’s a common misconception to think that thin-set mortar can be used to correct floor flatness. This is an incorrect use of mortar and can lead to failure. In fact, trying to use thin-set mortar to correct for subfloor imperfections is ultimately much more time consuming, costly and labor intensive. The simplest way to achieve flatness is by using a self-leveling underlayment.
Some self-leveling underlayment materials offer a rapid cure to fast track the installation of ceramic or natural stone tile set with modified thin set mortar. Tile can be installed in as little as 4 hours and resilient flooring in 12 to 14 hours. This helps to minimize project downtime and allows the work schedule to proceed expeditiously, especially on renovation projects when downtime must be minimized.
CUSTOM recommends LevelQuik® RS Rapid Setting Self Leveling Underlayment which seeks its own level within minutes and provides early high compressive strength. This rapid setting formula can accept thin-set tile applications in 4 hours or less after application. LevelQuik RS will achieve a compressive value of 4500 psi when fully cured and can be applied up to 1-1/2" in thickness in a single pour.
